Cybersecurity Audit: Learning from Failures
The City’s Auditor General has released Phase 1 of the Cybersecurity Follow-Up Audit, shedding light on what led to Hamilton’s February 2024 cyberattack. The findings are both clear and frustrating: serious security issues were identified as far back as 2021, but weren’t addressed in time to prevent the breach. The audit outlines six major failures: Chronic understaffing in IT security Frequent leadership turnover Lack of follow-through on 2021 recommendations No centrali

Vacant Unit Tax: Why I'm Supporting Another Year
Last year, Hamilton faced a housing crisis: rental units were scarce, homes weren't for sale, and empty properties sat vacant while families struggled to find housing. Council passed a Vacant Unit Tax (VUT) to address this, and I supported it. I want Ward 11 residents to know where I stand on this contentious issue - especially now that some Councillors are calling for the VUT to be scrapped after just one year. Why I Supported the VUT I voted yes for two reasons (and I d

2026 Budget: My Commitment to Fiscal Responsibility
Mayor Horwath released her 2026 Budget Directive this week, instructing staff to prepare a "Hold the Line" budget with a maximum tax increase of 4.25%. The directive responds to economic uncertainty and affordability challenges facing Hamilton residents. As budget season approaches, I want Ward 11 residents to know where I stand: I vote against budgets that don't make fiscal sense or that place unreasonable financial burdens on taxpayers. I've done it before, and I'll do

🛣️ How Hamilton Decides When (and Why) to Change Speed Limits
When residents request a speed limit reduction on their street, it's easy to assume the decision comes down to the number of complaints or how dangerous a road feels. The reality is more technical - speed limit changes are guided by national engineering standards and a risk-based approach designed to balance safety, driver behaviour, and road design. The Method Behind the Signs The City of Hamilton follows the Transportation Association of Canada's Canadian Guidelines for Est
