This past month, I had the privilege of presenting the Bernie Morelli Lifetime Achievement Award to Glanbrook’s own Carol Mayner at the 30th Annual Senior of the Year Awards.
Hosted at Carmen’s Event Centre, the event celebrated Hamilton seniors who have made exceptional voluntary contributions to our city. For three decades, this program has honoured residents aged 65 and older whose dedication enriches the social, cultural, and civic life of Hamilton.
Carol’s impact spans over 40 years of heartfelt service. Her tireless work with Glanbrook Community Services and other charitable organizations has built lasting connections and uplifted countless lives in Ward 11 and beyond. Her commitment to community is a shining example of what it means to serve with compassion and purpose.
These awards matter because they shine a light on the quiet, consistent efforts that keep our communities thriving. Carol and her fellow honourees represent the volunteers who show up, lend a hand, and make our communities a better place to call home.
With nearly 21% of Hamilton’s population - about 119,000 residents - aged 65 or older, seniors continue to play a vital role in shaping our city. Through volunteering, mentoring, and supporting local organizations, they remain active contributors to community life.
The City of Hamilton and its partners are committed to building an age-friendly city, offering programs and services that support older adults. Recognizing leaders like Carol is part of that commitment - honouring the wisdom, experience, and generosity they bring.
Carol, congratulations on this well-earned recognition. Your decades of service have made a meaningful difference, and we are deeply grateful for all you’ve done for Glanbrook and Ward 11.
