The City of Hamilton is taking proactive steps to support residents in light of ongoing uncertainty surrounding Canada Post labour negotiations.

The current contract between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers is set to expire on May 22, 2025. While negotiations have resumed, there is a real possibility of a labour disruption. A previous strike in late 2024 led to significant service delays that impacted the timely delivery of tax bills, and the City is Hamilton is planning now to avoid a repeat of that situation.

What Happened with the Interim Bill (February 2025):

Mail delays tied to the 2024 Canada Post strike caused many residents to receive their 2025 Interim Property Tax Bills late—even after the February 28 due date. Recognizing the hardship this caused, the City waived late penalties for 30 days, extending the payment deadline to March 31, 2025. This temporary measure helped protect impacted taxpayers from nearly $530,000 in penalties.

What We’re Doing Now – Final Bill (May 2025):

To stay ahead of a potential May disruption, the City is mailing the 2025 Final Property Tax Bills earlier than usual, between May 7–12, 2025. This is well in advance of the usual timeline and goes beyond the legislated 21-day notice period, ensuring residents have more time to receive and review their bills.

👉 Final Tax Due Dates remain unchanged:

  • June 30, 2025

  • September 30, 2025

Other Improvements Underway:

  • Encouraging enrollment in pre-authorized payment plans, with a streamlined portal coming soon.

  • Promoting eBilling to reduce reliance on postal service (currently only 6.7% of tax accounts use this).

  • Exploring secure online access to property tax accounts for greater convenience.

We encourage all residents to consider signing up for eBilling or pre-authorized payment to stay ahead of any future disruptions.
