Parks Maintenance in Ward 11: What to Expect This Season

As spring gets underway, the City's parks maintenance and operations program is active across Hamilton - including in Ward 11. Here's a plain-language summary of what residents can expect this season and how to report concerns when something needs attention.

General Cleanliness & Waste Collection

Waste collection bins are distributed throughout parks and open spaces, with service levels that increase during peak months from May through October. Approximately 670 receptacles are adjusted annually based on usage and seasonal needs. Additional servicing is available during community events or in high-demand areas.

Before mowing and trimming begins each season, City crews carry out ground litter removal across all municipal parks - clearing debris, refuse, and loose materials from pathways, turf areas, and general park spaces. This work is supported by seasonal summer students and community volunteers.

Spring Clean-Up

Each spring, parks undergo a focused clean-up to prepare for the season. This includes debris removal from turf areas, minor repairs following winter damage, and preparation of landscaped and naturalized spaces. Timing varies based on weather and site conditions - most of this work happens in late April and early May.

Grass Cutting & Turf Management

Grass cutting follows a structured schedule based on park type and intensity of use. High-use sports fields and community parks are maintained more frequently - typically every five working days - while lower-use and naturalized areas are cut every seven working days or less.

The City uses an Integrated Pest Management approach, which restricts pesticide use and relies on healthy grass growth as the primary method of weed management. This means dandelions may be more visible in some areas, particularly in spring. This is consistent city-wide and intentional.

Naturalized Areas

Not every part of a park is maintained the same way - and that's by design. Some areas are intentionally left more natural to support biodiversity, protect local habitats, and reduce maintenance impacts. What may look like unmanaged growth in these zones is part of a deliberate long-term environmental strategy. Educational signage may be installed in some locations to explain this approach.

Encampment Response

Parks staff respond to encampment situations in coordination with Hamilton Police Services, Municipal Law Enforcement, and Housing Services. Clean-ups are prioritized based on health and safety concerns, with particular attention to locations near schools and playgrounds. This work is coordinated to ensure sites are addressed safely, in compliance with applicable by-laws, and with connection to housing-focused supports.

Encampment concerns can be reported through 3-1-1 or online at hamilton.ca.

Service Adjustments

Weather conditions and equipment availability can affect schedules throughout the season. When temporary reductions are necessary, aesthetic work - such as trimming around fence lines - is typically scaled back first, with no lasting impact on overall program delivery.

How to Report a Concern

If you notice a maintenance issue, safety concern, or litter problem in any Ward 11 park, you can report it directly to the City by calling 3-1-1 or submitting a request online at hamilton.ca.
