City Council has approved a motion to install a new “Lest We Forget” Remembrance crosswalk in Mount Hope, set to be located at the intersection of Airport Road and Homestead Drive.

The location is highly fitting for such a memorial. Just south of the intersection is the home of the 447 Wing of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association, a not-for-profit, community service organization composed of veterans from Canadian and allied forces, as well as aviation-minded public members. The 447 Wing operates a restaurant and banquet hall that hosts numerous community events.

Further west in Mount Hope is the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, which hosts one of Canada's largest Remembrance Day services each year.

With its deep ties to military history and aviation heritage, the crosswalk will serve as a meaningful, daily reminder at a central location in the community.

Many Mount Hope residents have expressed the importance of honouring veterans and maintaining visible connections to our military heritage. This crosswalk is a tangible way to reflect that commitment and ensure remembrance is part of the community's everyday landscape.

City staff are now managing the technical and logistical aspects, including design, materials, road surface preparation, and installation scheduling. If all timelines align, the crosswalk will be ready for this year’s Remembrance Day service. If not, it will be installed as soon as practically possible.

This new memorial will stand as a permanent tribute to the veterans and current service members this crosswalk will honour.

Lest we forget.
