Keeping Glanbrook Safe: Working with Hamilton Police Services

Public safety is a top priority for me in Ward 11 and I and my team work daily to advocate for you for safer communities and roads in our ward. While the Hamilton Police Services (HPS) operate independently of Council, we maintain a strong collaborative working relationship to ensure the safety and well-being of our community.

Independent Operations

It's crucial for police to operate independently of council for several important reasons:

  • Preventing Undue Influence: Independence helps ensure that policing decisions are based on objective law enforcement needs and not influenced by political agendas or individual council members' interests.

  • Protecting Public Trust: When police operate without political interference, the public can have greater confidence that laws are enforced fairly and impartially, regardless of their political affiliations or social standing.

  • Maintaining Operational Effectiveness: Police need the freedom to make operational decisions quickly and effectively based on their professional expertise and knowledge of evolving situations. Political interference can hinder this ability.

  • Upholding the Rule of Law: The police are responsible for upholding the law, which applies to everyone equally, including elected officials. Independence helps ensure that no one is above the law.

  • Avoiding Conflicts of Interest: Council members may have personal or political connections that could create conflicts of interest if they had direct control over police operations.

  • Safeguarding Against Corruption: Independent police forces are less susceptible to corruption and abuse of power that can arise when political influence dictates law enforcement activities.

In essence, police independence helps safeguard the integrity of law enforcement and ensures that it serves the best interests of the entire community, not just a select few.

Here's how it works:

  • Independent Operation: The HPS makes its own decisions regarding day-to-day operations and enforcement activities. Council's role is primarily to approve funding for police services.

  • Collaboration and Information Sharing: My office works closely with HPS to share relevant information and community concerns that may assist them in their duties. This collaboration helps ensure that our police force is aware of local issues and can respond effectively.

  • Advocating for Glanbrook: I advocate for Glanbrook's needs within the context of police services, ensuring our community's voice is heard when discussing resource allocation and policing priorities.

How You Can Help:

  • Report incidents: If you witness a crime or suspicious activity, please report it to HPS immediately.

  • To report an incident that requires a police response, depending on the circumstance can be done through 911 or the non-emergency line at (905) 546-4925. There are some instances where reports can be submitted via our website. Online Reporting | Hamilton Police Service This link explains in more detail.

  • The Aggressive Drivers Hotline is a phone number that concerned citizens may call if they witness an act of bad driving on the streets of Hamilton and wish to report the incident. As a second option, driving complaints may also be submitted by email. Both the telephone hotline and email address are operational 24/7.

    •       Aggressive Drivers Hotline: 905-546-1768

            Aggressive Drivers Email: aggressivedriver@hamiltonpolice.ca

    • Callers will be asked to leave a message on a voice mail system that includes the following information:

      ·         name and telephone number

      ·         the date of the offence

      ·         time of the offence

      ·         location of the offence

      ·         the offending driver’s licence plate number

      ·         description of the vehicle

    • Once the information is verified, Hamilton Police may issue a violation letter to the registered owner of the vehicle. Please note, this letter is not a fine.

  • Connect with your Community Policing Liaison Officer: Your Community Policing Liaison Officer is a valuable resource for information and support.

(This is the best resource to use if you have complaints regarding traffic safety or a request for increased police presence in Division 3.)

  • Stay informed: Stay up-to-date on local safety issues and crime prevention tips by following HPS on social media (Facebook & Instagram) or subscribing to their newsletters.

Listening to Your Concerns

My team and I recently had the opportunity to speak with residents about your concerns regarding safety in Ward 11. We additionally conducted interviews with residents to get the issues important to you and listen to your concerns. We heard you loud and clear on issues like auto theft, youth boredom, and local crime and heard how these issues are affecting you as a community. These conversations are valuable in helping us understand your priorities and will continue to guide our efforts to improve safety for everyone in Glanbrook. We look forward to having ongoing conversations about your concerns and the actions we take to make our ward safer for all.

Taking Action

We want to assure you that we're taking your concerns seriously. We've been working closely with the Hamilton Police Services to increase police visibility and response times in Ward 11. We're also excited about the upcoming Glanbrook Recreation Centre Community meeting (more details to come!), which will focus on creating more local activities and opportunities for youth, families, and all residents. Furthermore, we continue to collaborate with both police and City staff on initiatives to enhance safety on our streets.

We are committed to keeping you informed about our progress and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts and concerns with us. Together, we can make Glanbrook an even safer and more vibrant community.
