Starting November 5th, 2025, Hamilton’s 911 emergency medical response system is getting a major upgrade. The Ministry of Health is introducing the Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) - a medically approved, internationally recognized system designed to improve how emergency calls are handled.
When you call 911 after November 5th, dispatchers will follow a structured protocol of medical questions developed by doctors and emergency experts. This isn’t a delay - it’s a way to ensure the right help is sent with the right resources, right away.
While paramedics are en route, dispatchers can provide real-time lifesaving instructions, including CPR or choking relief. This system improves patient outcomes and helps use paramedic resources more efficiently.
In rural Ward 11, where response times can be longer due to distance, this new system is especially valuable. Dispatchers can guide family members through critical interventions while help is on the way.
Here’s how you can help when calling 911:
Stay calm
Answer all questions clearly
Don’t hang up until told it’s okay
In rural areas, be ready to provide location details - street address, landmarks, nearby intersections, or Farm 911 field access sign numbers that will help paramedics find you faster
