With summer celebrations like Victoria Day and Canada Day approaching, the City of Hamilton reminds everyone to enjoy fireworks responsibly. The Hamilton Fire Department, following the Ontario Fire Marshal’s recommendations, strongly encourages residents to attend public fireworks displays conducted by certified technicians. If you choose to set off family fireworks at home, please follow these important safety guidelines:

  • Only responsible adults should supervise and set off fireworks. Individuals under 18 are not permitted to purchase or discharge fireworks.

  • Fireworks can only be discharged on private property between dusk and 11 p.m. on Victoria Day and Canada Day. In case of bad weather, they may be used the following day during the same hours.

  • Never set off fireworks on public or City property, such as roads or parks-this is strictly prohibited and can result in fines.

  • Choose a clear, open space away from buildings, vehicles, and combustible materials. Check for overhead wires or tree branches.

  • Always keep a water hose or bucket of water nearby.

  • Read and follow all instructions on fireworks packaging.

  • If a firework doesn’t have a base, secure it in a bucket of sand or dirt before lighting.

  • Closely supervise children with sparklers. Sparklers burn extremely hot and can ignite clothing. After use, soak sparklers in water immediately to prevent burns.

  • Dispose of used fireworks safely by soaking them in water before placing them in the trash.

Protecting Pets During Fireworks

Fireworks can be frightening and even dangerous for pets. The loud noises, bright flashes, and strong smells can cause anxiety, stress, and panic in animals. Common reactions include shaking, hiding, excessive drooling, barking, or trying to escape. In severe cases, pets may injure themselves or run away, increasing the risk of getting lost or hurt.

Tips to Keep Pets Safe:

  • Keep pets indoors during fireworks displays, with windows and curtains closed.

  • Play calming music or turn on the TV to help mask the noise.

  • Provide a safe, quiet space for your pet, such as a crate or a favorite room.

  • Ensure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are up to date in case they escape.

  • Never allow pets near fireworks or leftover debris, as ingestion of firework materials can be toxic.

  • Take dogs for a walk before fireworks begin, as they may be too frightened to go out later.

If your pet shows signs of severe anxiety, consult your veterinarian for additional support.

Remember: Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed safely by all-including our four-legged family members. Celebrate responsibly and help keep Hamilton safe this summer!
