Stormwater management fee deferred until 2028
Hamilton’s separate stormwater management fee has been deferred until 2028. Council ratified the decision on October 1.
I voted to postpone the fee and have spoken up about its impact on farms, small businesses and non-profit organizations. These concerns need to be addressed as the City works through the details of the new funding model.
The additional time allows further review of provincial changes affecting farm and managed-forest properties, along with issues involving school boards and implementation.
What this means for residents
The separate fee will not begin in 2027. Stormwater services continue to be funded through the existing system during the deferral.
When the new fee is introduced, the City plans to separate stormwater charges from wastewater charges. The rate is set by Council, so figures previously published for the original launch should not be treated as a confirmed 2028 bill.
