Hamilton is preparing to take a major step forward in public safety by transitioning to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1)—a Canada-wide initiative to modernize the 9-1-1 emergency response system. This upgrade will improve response times, provide greater location accuracy, and allow residents to connect to emergency services using new communication methods, including text and data.
What’s Changing?
Originally mandated by the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission)Â for completion by March 4, 2025, the deadline for national implementation has now been extended to March 31, 2027. However, the City of Hamilton remains ahead of the curve.
Thanks to coordinated work between Hamilton Fire, Hamilton Police, Bell, and Solacom Inc.—the company supplying our new call handling system—the City is now targeting Q3 2025 for full implementation. That’s well in advance of most other Ontario municipalities.
Why It Matters
NG9-1-1 is more than just a technology update. It means:
Faster, more accurate emergency response, especially in rural areas like Ward 11, where precise location data is critical.
Texting capabilities in the future—essential for people with hearing or speech impairments or during situations when speaking is unsafe.
Integration with modern technologies, paving the way for the future use of video, images, and advanced data sharing during emergencies.
Only six municipalities in Ontario have made the transition so far, putting Hamilton in a leadership position on this vital public safety upgrade.
Who’s Involved?
City staff across multiple departments are actively working with:
Solacom Inc. (Call Handling System provider)
Bell Canada (Network provider)
Hamilton Fire DepartmentÂ
Hamilton Police ServiceÂ
Stay tuned for further updates as the City prepares to implement this system—designed to serve residents faster, smarter, and better.
