Canada Day is a time to come together in celebration—but it’s also a time to keep safety top of mind. Fireworks can be dazzling and fun, but they can also pose risks to people, pets, and property when not handled with care. Let's work together to keep our communities safe and enjoyable for all.
🎆 Attend Public Displays When Possible
The Hamilton Fire Department, in line with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office, recommends that residents attend professional fireworks shows led by certified technicians. These experts are trained to handle and discharge fireworks safely.
One fantastic option is the City of Hamilton's:

🏠 If You’re Setting Off Family Fireworks
If you choose to set off fireworks at home, here’s what you need to know:
Fireworks can only be discharged on private property between dusk and 11 p.m. on Canada Day (or the following day in case of rain), per Hamilton’s Fireworks By-law.
Setting off fireworks on public property, parks, or roadways is prohibited and may result in fines.
Please be considerate of neighbours, especially those with young children, pets, or PTSD.

🔥 Fireworks Safety Tips
If you’re setting off family fireworks on your property:
Only adults should supervise and ignite fireworks. Children under 18 should not handle them.
Choose a clear, open area away from homes, sheds, vehicles, and trees.
Always have a water hose or bucket on hand.
Follow manufacturer instructions and use sand or dirt to secure fireworks if they don’t come with a base.
🐾 What About Pets?
Fireworks can be terrifying for animals. Here's how to protect your furry family members:
Keep pets indoors during fireworks, with windows closed and a fan, white noise machine, or calming music playing.
Create a safe space—a cozy den with their bed, favourite toy, and a blanket.
For highly anxious pets, talk to your vet about calming products or temporary medications.
Don’t bring pets to outdoor fireworks—even calm dogs can panic and run away.
🧠 Supporting Loved Ones with Noise Sensitivities
Some members of our community—including veterans, individuals with PTSD, and those with sensory sensitivities—may experience stress during fireworks.
Let your neighbours know if you plan to use fireworks, so they can prepare.
Consider alternatives like quiet or drone light shows, which are increasingly popular.
Let’s celebrate Canada Day in a way that’s safe, respectful, and welcoming for all. For more details, visit www.hamilton.ca/FireworksSafety.
Wishing you a Happy and safe Canada Day!
