Ward 11 Councillor Mark Tadeson continues his commitment to road safety by advocating for an expanded network of Dynamic Display Signs (DDS) throughout his ward. These electronic speed signs, which display drivers' current speed alongside the posted speed limit, have proven effective in encouraging safer driving habits in residential and high-traffic areas.

Current Speed Sign Network

Ward 11 currently hosts eleven active speed signs across key corridors, with four permanent installations providing continuous monitoring and seven rotational signs that move to different locations throughout the year.

Permanent Installations:

  • Binbrook Road: Two strategic locations including:

    • one approximately 200 meters east of Fletcher Road and

    • another at 2528 Binbrook Road

  • Twenty Road East: Positioned across from 3 Greti Drive to monitor traffic in this busy corridor

  • Homestead Drive: Located at 3272 Homestead Drive, providing continuous speed monitoring

Rotational Program:

The rotational speed signs target various problem areas throughout the ward on a scheduled basis:

  • Upper James Street: Two locations on Homestead Drive (3384 and 2942) were active since January 30, 2023

  • Dickenson Road West: Currently monitoring speeds at 9346 Dickenson Road West

  • Pumpkin Pass: Two signs were recently deployed (May 14, 2025) at 400 Pumpkin Pass near Our Lady of Hope Catholic Elementary School and at 184 Pumpkin Pass

  • Airport Road: The newest installations, active since July 18, 2025, monitor traffic at 9120 and 9181 Airport Road West

Pushing for Additional Coverage

Recognizing the effectiveness of these traffic calming measures, Councillor Tadeson is actively working to expand the program to additional Ward 11 locations where residents have raised speed concerns.

"These dynamic speed signs have shown real results in helping to slow traffic and make our neighborhoods safer," said Councillor Tadeson. "That's why I'm advocating for additional signs on roads where our residents have identified speeding as an ongoing concern."

The Councillor is specifically pushing for new installations on:

  • Nebo Road: A key connector road where residents have reported persistent speeding issues

  • Fletcher Road: An important arterial route requiring enhanced speed monitoring

  • Trinity Church Road: A residential area where traffic safety is a community priority

  • Hendershot Road: Another location identified through resident feedback and traffic analysis

Proven Effectiveness

Dynamic Display Signs have demonstrated their value as a cost-effective traffic calming solution. Unlike traditional static speed limit signs, these electronic displays actively engage drivers by showing their current speed in real-time, creating immediate awareness of speed violations. Studies have shown these signs can reduce average speeds by 3-7 mph and significantly decrease the number of vehicles exceeding posted speed limits.

The rotational program allows the city to maximize the impact of these devices by moving them to different problem areas, ensuring broader coverage while maintaining the element of surprise that keeps drivers alert to their speed.

Community Partnership

Councillor Tadeson's efforts to expand the speed sign program reflect his responsive approach to constituent concerns. The proposed new locations on Nebo, Fletcher, Trinity Church, and Hendershot Roads were identified through ongoing dialogue with residents who have raised traffic safety concerns in these areas.

"Road safety is a shared responsibility," noted Councillor Tadeson. "These signs are just one tool in our comprehensive approach to creating safer streets. I encourage all residents to continue reporting traffic concerns so we can work together to address them."

Looking Ahead

As the city continues to evaluate traffic patterns and safety data, Councillor Tadeson remains committed to advocating for resources that will enhance road safety throughout Ward 11. The expansion of the Dynamic Display Sign program represents an important step in creating safer, more livable communities for all residents.

Residents who have traffic safety concerns or observations about speeding in their neighborhoods are encouraged to contact Councillor Tadeson's office to contribute to ongoing safety assessments and potential future sign deployments.
