The City of Hamilton is providing an important update regarding the Vacant Unit Tax (VUT) program. Due to the Canada Post labour disruption and ongoing backlog, adjustments to the declaration timelines have become necessary. While these changes will affect when property owners can submit their declarations, the overall VUT program remains unchanged.
What Property Owners Need to Know
Property owners were scheduled to receive notice letters in December 2024 containing essential information such as property roll numbers, access codes, key deadlines, and instructions for completing the VUT declaration.
Due to postal delays, the City will present updated timelines for declarations to the General Issues Committee in January 2025. Residential property owners must now submit their mandatory occupancy declarations between February 10, 2025, and April 30, 2025. Late penalties for declarations made after April 30 will be waived for this year only.
In the meantime, the City will be updating its website soon to notify residents about the amended timelines. Please visit hamilton.ca/VacantUnitTax for the latest updates.

Our Ward 11 office is dedicated to delivering a seamless and successful rollout of the VUT program, ensuring a positive experience for all property owners.
