Have Your Say: Comment Period Now Open for Highway 6 and Haldibrook Road Intersection Improvements

Deadline to submit comments: September 29, 2026

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is inviting residents to review and comment on the proposed improvements to the intersection of Highway 6 and Haldibrook Road, at the boundary of the City of Hamilton and Haldimand County. With the study now in its final stages, this is a key opportunity for the community to weigh in before the project moves forward.

What's Being Proposed

Since August 2025, MTO has retained Egis to carry out a Preliminary Design and Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) Study for the intersection. After evaluating a range of design alternatives, the preferred plan is a signalized intersection, including the installation of median islands along Highway 6.

Following a Municipal Advisory Committee meeting held on February 11, 2026, the design was refined to add opposing left-turn lanes on Haldibrook Road to accommodate projected traffic demand from future development in the area. These changes affected property impacts, costs, and other considerations, and are reflected in the current preferred alternative.

Full details — including existing conditions, the alternatives considered, consultation to date, and a summary of environmental issues and mitigation measures — are documented in the project's Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR), now posted on the project website.

Why Your Comments Matter

The Notice of Study Completion, announcing that the TESR is ready for public review, was posted on September 1, 2026, opening a 30-day public comment period that closes September 29, 2026. This is the community's opportunity to review the recommended design and share feedback before MTO moves into detailed design.

Comments submitted during this period are part of the formal record. They help ensure the final design reflects the needs and concerns of the people who live, drive, and work in the area — including nearby property owners who received letters on August 28, 2026, regarding potential property acquisitions or impacts to existing entrances.

What Happens Next

Construction of the recommended improvements is currently planned to begin in 2028, subject to the completion of detailed design, property acquisition, utility relocations, and required permits and approvals.
