Councillor Johnson’s position on Maple Leaf

marktadeson

The Councillors and the Mayor were informed for the first time yesterday about this situation at 11:30am. I felt I should have been given more information and more time to digest that information before making any decisions especially since it will be in my ward.

For that reason, I voted the proposal down.

Now that I have had the opportunity to ask the pertinent questions and the time to obtain the answers, I can support this facility.

Please note, this is not the same facility as was proposed before. 1) There will be no livestock, kill floor or rendering at this location. 2) They are investing $400 million dollars into this location. It will be LEEDS (silver for sure, gold hopefully) certified with no odours. 3) They are closing down 6 locations across Canada to centralize in Hamilton. All of these other older locations that process their deli meat do not have any problems with odours. Even so I will be pushing for a one odour unit at the point of impingement on their Certificate of Approval. In other words, you should not be able to smell anything at their fence line. 4) Trucks will be using Nebo and Twenty Road as their route until the Dartnell extension has been completed. 5) The company will be holding an open house to answer any questions/concerns residents may have within the next month.
