When it’s sizzling outside, outdoor activity may be the last thing on your mind. Undoubtedly, hot temperatures can keep us inside our air conditioned homes and limit our physical activity outdoors. However, there are lots of ways to stay active in the heat safely. Remember to stay well hydrated, slap on that sunscreen beforehand, wear light breathable clothing and protect your eyes with sunglasses. Whatever you decide, don’t over-do it!! Reduce your intensity and get outside when it’s coolest (early morning or evening). Here are some great ways to beat the heat and stay in shape without melting away in the scorching sun.
1. Find a local swimming pool and jump in! Doing laps can be a great way to keep your cardio up, provide an upper and lower body workout and still stay cool.
2. Explore a wooded area nearby and go for a hike along a nice shaded trail. The natural protection can help keep you cool, just be sure to pick something that isn’t too intense….something with little incline and not too long (60 minutes) is plenty for those hot summer days.
3. Stay in the great indoors! Ok, it might not be as fun as your run along the beach but going to your gym/community centre to hop on a cardio machine or join a group fitness class might just be what you need right now. Most often, these places are kept cool so you don’t have to worry about overheating during your workout.
4. Have fun and play games instead. Frisbee golf, beach volleyball, even bocce ball can be great alternatives to intense workouts. Although fairly light in intensity, these types of games keep you moving and those steps will rack up pretty quickly.
5. Enjoy some water sports! Go kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, paddle boating or windsurfing…..water sports are a great way to stay refreshed and get your activity in for the day.
