Risk Management Department Information If your vehicle is damaged by a pothole or other road maintenance issue: report the pothole or road hazard see a licensed motor vehicle mechanic do not drive your vehicle if it is not working properly. Your vehicle insurance policy may provide coverage for this type of loss. Call your insurance company or broker for more information. The City investigates and fixes road hazards. Claims made to the City for property damage are examined individually. You will receive a written reply in the mail to let you know they received your claim. A decision on your claim is made when all of the information has been reviewed. Contacts for Roads by Issue Report Potholes, Sinkholes & Road Cuts on City-Maintained Streets A sinkhole is a natural depression in the surface that is much deeper or larger than a pothole. They vary in size from less than a metre to several hundred metres. A pothole is a defect in the roadway caused by pavement fatigue, poor support beneath the surface or moisture penetration. Potholes vary in size, depth and shape. A road cut is a clean, smooth, square cut where there is water or sewer replacement or utility work being done. Report Street Sweeping/Dust on Road The City cleans streets on a seasonal basis. If there is construction in the area, there may be dust or mud build up on your road. After you report a problem, we will clean your street the next time we are in your area. You are also responsible for maintenance or damages. If possible, remove City and private tree branch debris off the road or sidewalk and package it into four foot bundles for pick up on your regular garbage day. How to Report Call 905-546-2489 To report: fallen tree that is on City or private property fallen tree/branch that is blocking roadway or sidewalk Mud Tracking Fouling the highway or mud tracking is when a vehicle spills or tracks mud, soil or building materials when leaving or entering a property, onto a city street. Drivers need to make sure their vehicles are not tracking materials onto the street. If material gets on the street, it is the driver’s responsibility to clean it. Municipal Law Enforcement Officers can investigate. If they find a violation they will ensure the operator is aware of their responsibility to keep the street clean. If there are subsequent violations officers can issue a Fee for Inspection and may issue a ticket and/or court actions.     Ward 11 Community Grants Program Community Grants Community Grants help local groups bring ideas to life across Ward 11, from youth programs to seniors initiatives and community events. This pilot offers up to $2,000 per organization or group. Applications are open now and close March 31, 2026. Ward 11 Youth + Seniors / Community Grant Pilot Small grants. Local impact. Simple and transparent. The Ward 11 Youth + Seniors / Community Grant Pilot supports local organizations and community groups delivering projects, events, or initiatives that strengthen Ward 11. This pilot is designed to be straightforward, transparent, and community-serving. Applications submitted in the final week of the intake will be assessed as submitted. Early feedback is only available for applications submitted by March 15, 2026. Does receiving this grant impact the funding my organization receives from the City Enrichment Fund? No. If Council adopts the standard grant approval condition, any funding received through the Ward 11 Community Grants Program will be exempt on a one-time basis and will not be counted toward City funding formulas, including the City Enrichment Fund allocation. In practical terms, receiving a ward-specific grant will not reduce or affect your organization’s eligibility or funding level under the City Enrichment Fund.

Councillor Mark Tadeson is committed to improving public safety and infrastructure Street Lighting Contacts Report street light repair or maintenance Call 905-546-2098 Email streetlighting@hamilton.ca For more information: Street Lighting Hamilton manages around 45,000 streetlights, with approximately 40,000 of them featuring LED cobra-head designs tailored for roadway illumination. While some decorative luminaires still utilize High Pressure Sodium or Metal Halide lamps, there is an ongoing transition to LED lights due to their superior energy efficiency and reduced maintenance needs. To optimize efficiency and minimize maintenance expenses, the City has implemented a proactive streetlight replacement program. This program is strategically timed based on the maximum usable service life of a streetlight lamp, ensuring a consistent and reliable lighting infrastructure. REPAIR OR MAINTAIN STREET LIGHTING If a streetlight is burnt out or needs repair and it is not an emergency, the City will repair it within 5 working days . We respond to emergency street light repairs immediately. Emergencies include: open luminaires (unlatched) luminaire hanging by its' wires exposed wires any other situation that could be an immediate risk to the public motor vehicle accidents involving street light, no matter how severe the damage Report issues with lighting on a Provincial route ( i.e., Highway 403, QEW or parts of Highway 6 not maintained by the City of Hamilton ) to the Ministry of Transportation's Corridor Maintenance office at 1-866-636-0663.

Speeding and Trucks Off-Route Having safe roads is essential to a happy, safe community. Below, find the fastest, most efficient way to deal with these issues with the City of Hamilton. Road Speeding Are you experiencing speeding on our neighbourhood roads? See below for what to do if you encounter speeding. Trucks Off-Route The City of Hamilton has a dedicated Truck Route plan and map. Please see below for information on the route, mapping, and City contacts for issues. Aggressive Driving Aggressive Driving can be reported. See below for what to do if you encounter aggressive driving. Speeding In order for traffic calming measures (such as speed bumps) to be added to a location our traffic department would first need to conduct a traffic study. Please send us an email detailing the location you feel is a problem with speeding and we will email our traffic operations team and ask that they please review your email and provide suggestions in regards to deterring speeding along your road. Please be aware that currently the demands on our City Traffic Department Staff has created a back log of requests for investigations and therefore we ask for your patience. Staff prioritize investigations based on potential risk factors. Examples of reviews that are prioritized include pedestrian safety concerns, sightlines issues, and school zones. In the short term, staff are documenting all requests and would again ask for your patience as they work through their investigations. Once the investigation is complete staff will provide a response including review results and recommendations. Please send us an email through the contact form at the bottom of this page. We also have a Slow down, Safety zone sign program available through the City that we find is helpful in reducing speeds in neighbourhoods. Our ‘Slow Down, Safety Zone’ lawn sign program is developed from our Traffic Roadway Safety Section and is available to residents through the Councillors office to promote safer streets and remind drivers to reduce their speed in residential areas. Signs are available free of charge and available for pick up at the Glanbrook Municipal Service Centre (4280 Binbrook Road, next to the Glanbrook Arena) or any City Municipal Service Centre. Trucks Off-Route The City of Hamilton has a dedicated truck route for all heavy trucks. See the Map: Truck Route Map 2023 The majority of materials consumed in Hamilton are now transported exclusively by trucks to their final destinations. The city's transportation landscape has evolved, with a decreased focus on heavy industry in the north-east quadrant of the lower city and the introduction of key transportation facilities like the Lincoln Alexander Parkway/Red Hill Valley Parkway system. Hamilton's Truck Route Network plays a vital role in directing trucks onto appropriate roadways. The Truck Route Network serves the following purposes: Facilitate the safe and efficient movement of goods and services. Acknowledge and seek to mitigate the impacts of truck traffic on the broader community's interests, including concerns related to safety, congestion, noise, and air quality. Safeguard the city's road infrastructure by directing trucks away from roads that cannot withstand heavy loads or are otherwise unsuitable for truck traffic, such as those with narrow lanes or weight restrictions on bridges. Enforcement Enforcement of these restrictions, as stipulated in the By-law, falls solely under the jurisdiction of the Hamilton Police Service (HPS). The City’s Truck Route Signing System employs both Permissive and Restrictive signage. While trucks are expected to adhere to designated routes, they may temporarily leave the permissive route to reach their destination using the most direct path from the truck route.
