Last year, Canadian Blood Services collected almost 900,000 units of blood to meet the need of thousands of hospital patients across Canada. However, our active blood donor base continues to decline and if we can’t recruit new donors, it will become increasingly difficult to meet hospital demand in the future.
We are anticipating that the demand for blood and blood products will continue to grow and to meet Canada’s future blood needs we must encourage more Canadians to become regular blood donors now.
Currently we have about 415,000 active blood donors (those who have donated within the last 12 months). By 2014/15, we will need to grow our active blood donor base to 500,000. If our current donor and donation trends continue we will face a gap of 30,000 donors.
We need your help! We have a Blood Donor Clinic coming up in Binbrook and Winona Binbrook is June 8th and Aug 10th at the Binbrook Fairgrounds from 3pm – 7pm and Winona is at Immaculate Heart of Mary on June 22, 2011 from 2:30-7:30 p.m.
