A message from Councillor Mark Tadeson
Environment Canada has issued an Orange Warning for freezing rain for the City of Hamilton. With accumulations of up to 12 mm and wind gusts reaching 55 km/h expected throughout the day, several local services, schools, and programs have been impacted.
While my office remains open to assist residents, we encourage everyone to exercise extreme caution if you must travel today.
🏫 School and Education Closures
Due to the inclement weather, the following educational facilities are closed or have cancelled transportation:
Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB): All schools, adult education centers, school-based child care, and administrative buildings are CLOSED.
Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB): Schools remain OPEN, but all transportation is CANCELLED.
Private & Specialized Schools: Providence Christian School, Calvin Christian School (West 5th and Unity Campuses), and Hillfield Strathallan College are CLOSED.
French Catholic Schools: ÉS Académie Catholique Mère-Teresa, ÉÉC Monseigneur-de-Laval, and ÉÉC Notre-Dame are CLOSED.
🚌 Transit and Community Services
Several vital community services have suspended operations for the safety of staff and participants:
DARTS: All services are cancelled for the day.
Seniors Services: Programming at the Ancaster Senior Achievement Centre, Flamborough Seniors’ Centre, and Sackville Seniors’ Centre is cancelled (though the buildings currently remain open).
Macassa Lodge: The Adult Day program is cancelled.
Dundas Community Services: All meal and transportation services are cancelled.
VON: Meals on Wheels Hamilton is cancelled.
Six Nations of the Grand River: All offices, including the Family Health Team, are closed.
🏀 Recreation and Afterschool Programs
Because many of our recreation programs operate within HWDSB facilities, the following impacts are in effect:
Gymnasium Programs Cancelled: Beasley, Dalewood, Domenic Agostino Riverdale, Hill Park, Kanétskare, Norman Pinky Lewis, Sir Allan MacNab, and Sir Winston Churchill.
Afterschool Programs Cancelled: Bennetto Community Centre, Norman Pinky Lewis, and Westmount Recreation Centre.
🏛️ Other Local Closures
The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is closed today.
Choices Association community participation programs are closed.
❄️ Road Conditions and City Response
The City’s Roadway Maintenance team worked overnight to pre-treat escarpment accesses, sidewalks, bike lanes, and transit stops. While there is a provincial salt shortage, Hamilton’s salt supply remains adequate, and crews are prioritizing high-risk areas like bridge decks, hills, and curves.
The highest risk for ice accumulation is currently in northern areas of the city and along the escarpment. At this time, all City administrative offices remain open, but we are monitoring the situation closely.
Stay Safe, Ward 11
Please allow for significant extra travel time if you are commuting.
