Vacant Unit Tax Declaration Reminder
Hamilton homeowners are required to complete an annual Vacant Unit Tax declaration confirming whether their property was occupied during the previous year.
For most residents, the process simply involves confirming that their home was occupied.
Councillor Mark Tadeson has heard concerns from residents about the added step and continues to advocate for making the process simpler and easier for homeowners. We have already seen progress, with the Vacant Unit Tax team informing Councillor Tadeson that some of his recommendations have already been put in place.
He has also been clear that the program must demonstrate real value for taxpayers. If the Vacant Unit Tax does not meaningfully improve housing availability or reduce pressure on property taxes, he has indicated he would reassess his support for the program moving forward.
