Spring Maintenance at Hamilton's Municipal Cemeteries
Each spring, the City of Hamilton carries out its annual maintenance program at municipally operated cemeteries across the city. This work is underway now, running through approximately May 15, 2026.
What the Work Includes
Spring maintenance prepares cemetery grounds for the season following winter. This includes ground maintenance and turf repair, grave levelling, top-dressing and re-seeding, flower bed preparation, flat marker maintenance and installations, graveside clean-ups, and the activation of all water lines.
Work is carried out by City staff and may continue over several weeks depending on weather and ground conditions.
Seasonal Item Removal
In accordance with the City's Cemetery By-law, certain items are removed as part of the spring clean-up process. This includes artificial flowers and wreaths, glass items, Christmas ornaments, and any other materials that don't comply with the by-law.
Families are encouraged to remove personal items before the clean-up begins. Items removed by City staff are held for 60 days and can be reclaimed by families during that period.
For Families Visiting This Season
Maintenance crews may be on-site during your visit. Schedules vary by location and weather conditions. If you have questions about a specific cemetery or items that may have been removed, please reach out directly.
