School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week – June 1–5

This week, communities across Ontario are recognizing the dedicated people who make sure our children get to school and back safely. School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week 2026 runs from June 1 to 5 - and it's a moment worth pausing for.

Rain or shine, morning rush or afternoon pickup, Hamilton's school crossing guards are out there. They stand at some of our busiest intersections and school zones, stopping traffic and protecting the young pedestrians who depend on them every day. They're often the first familiar face a child sees on the walk to school.

Councillor Mark Tadeson joins in recognizing the crossing guards who serve Ward 11 and communities across Hamilton. Their work is quiet, consistent, and essential - and it deserves to be acknowledged.

How you can show appreciation this week:

Take a moment this week to say thank you to your local crossing guard. A wave, a kind word, or a handwritten card from your child goes a long way for someone who shows up every day to keep your family safe.

You can also help by doing your part in school zones: slow down, put away the phone, and obey the signals and instructions of crossing guards - who have legal authority to direct traffic.

About Hamilton's School Crossing Guard Program

The City of Hamilton operates a school crossing guard program at signalized and unsignalized intersections across the city. Guards are stationed at locations assessed for pedestrian risk near schools, and they operate during morning and afternoon school hours.

As a former school principal, I know too well, how important it is for children to arrive at school safely each day. During School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week, June 1–5, we recognize the dedicated crossing guards who help keep Hamilton students safe as they travel to and from school.
I encourage everyone to take a moment this week to thank a crossing guard in your neighbourhood with a kind word, a thank-you note, or a child's drawing. Their commitment and care make a real difference in our community every day.
To all of our crossing guards: thank you for helping make Glanbrook a safe and welcoming community for all.  Your efforts are deeply appreciated.  Councillor Mark Tadeson, Ward 11
