The City of Hamilton is inviting residents to learn more about a proposed Harmonized Private Tree By-law and updates to existing Woodland By-laws and Tree Protection Guidelines.
This work is focused on protecting large, mature trees that contribute to Hamilton’s urban forest while also clarifying requirements for property owners.
What’s Being Proposed
The proposed by-law would introduce a more consistent approach across the city. Depending on the final version, this could include:
Permits required for some tree removals
Replacement tree planting in certain cases
Clear exemptions for:
Dead or hazardous trees
Invasive species
Emergency work
Trees too close to buildings
Why This Matters
Trees play an important role in:
Reducing heat and improving air quality
Managing stormwater
Supporting neighbourhood character
The goal of this process is to balance environmental protection with practical considerations for homeowners.
