I'm pleased to announce that the intersection of Upper James and Twenty Road now features fully operational left turn signals - a significant safety and efficiency upgrade I've been advocating for extensively with City staff.

Why This Matters

This busy intersection serves thousands of vehicles daily, and residents have long expressed frustration with delays and safety concerns, particularly when making left turns during peak hours. The previous signal configuration often left drivers waiting through multiple light cycles, creating both inconvenience and potential safety hazards.

The Challenge

As Superintendent Peter Locs from Signals, Systems & Street Lighting explained to my office, this wasn't a simple upgrade. The existing wiring infrastructure couldn't support the advanced left turn signals, requiring a complete rewiring project. Site conditions proved challenging, necessitating specialized attention and careful coordination.

The Solution

Working diligently with City staff over recent weeks, we've successfully implemented:

  • Left turn signals active on all side streets feeding into the intersection

  • New detection systems for optimal traffic flow

  • Upgraded wiring infrastructure to support the enhanced signals

What's Next

City staff will return to the site next week to fine-tune timing and detection systems, ensuring the intersection operates at peak efficiency for all users.

This project demonstrates what we can accomplish when residents speak up about issues affecting their daily lives. Your feedback drives my advocacy at City Hall, and results like this show why that community input is so valuable.

Thank you for your patience during construction, and enjoy the improved traffic flow at this important intersection!
