Laverne Gaddye – Doesn’t Go Unnoticed !!

Glanbrook Rangers Jr “C” Banquet

The Glanbrook Rangers Jr.“C” Hockey Team held there Annual Banquet and Awards Nights to celebrate the 2010-2011 Season on April 4th at the Vicars Vice Restaurant in Elfrida. It was a great year for celebration as the Rangers finished in second place in the Niagara East Division.

As is the norm at an Awards Banquet, the outstanding players are recognized for their commitment, success and hard work. But this year there was a new award of recognition created, the “Vern Gaddye Award for the Hardest Worker on the Team”. Vern (Laverne)aka “Big Vern” is a born and raised Binbrook boy and is no stranger to the Glanbrook Arena and Junior “C” Hockey. In keeping with “Big Vern” style, let’s recognize the player’s accomplishments first and there were plenty of those.

The awards were presented by General Manager Tom Cole and Coach John McDonald. David Ferrito #21, Captain of the Team, received the team “M.V.P.” Award and he was also the teams leading scorer for the season. Tyler Leach #35 (Goaltender) was awarded the “Playoff M.V.P.” Award. Cal Smith #19, was awarded the “Coaches Award”. The “Most Improved Player” Award went to Mathew Susi #5.

For the third year in a row Jake Hill #2, took the “Best Defenseman” Award, and that is quite an accomplishment. “Rookie of the Year” Award went to Curtis Edwards #14 and Mark Rodgers #27.

The “Best Two Way Player” was presented to David Dewildt #28 and the “Most Desciplined Player” award went to Alexander Cappelletti #9.

This year’s new award, the “Vern Gaddye Award for the Hardest Worker on the Team” was presented and the recipient was Michael Dewildt #15. Tom Cole and John McDonald established the Trophy and it was named after Vern for his dedication and hard work that does not go unnoticed by the whole team. It was a surprise to Vern when he was called to the front to present this award and he was honoured to present it to Michael. Two weeks prior to the event, Vern had commented on how hard Dewildt works for his hockey team.

Vern Gaddye couldn’t have been a better choice in creating the new trophy. He has been affiliated with Junior “C” Hockey forever and a day, starting with smaller rolls and now in his capacity as Operations Manager. He is always a go to guy with the Community and he was instrumental in getting the addition to the Arena for extra space for the Junior “C” program. Gaddye has also been responsible for many of the team’s sponsorships and in fact he is a “jack of all trades” when it comes to getting any job done. The Glanbrook Community is proud that Big Vern has been recognized; his contributions, dedication and commitment to the Glanbrook Rangers and the Community are second to none.

Both Michael and David Dewildt are retiring Rangers and were presented with their home jerseys and pictures as mementos of their years with the Rangers.

This year the Glanbrook Rangers started an educational bursary which was sponsored by John Bruce Robinson Homes in Binbrook and they thanked him for that. The bursary was divided up amongst the players to help them with their education.

Each Player also got a warm up suit with the new Glanbrook Rangers log on the jacket and pants. This logo will be seen next year at the centre ice in the Glanbrook Arena.

There were approximately 90 people attending and they enjoyed a fabulous buffet put on by the Vicars Vice. Thanks were given to Graham of the Vicars Vice as he reserved the entire restaurant for the Rangers Banquet and gave excellent service as usual.

In closing the evening, several words of thanks from the parents were expressed and in true form for Big Vern, he personally thanked the coaching staff and all the volunteers for their dedication to the Glanbrook Rangers Jr “C” Hockey Team. Gaddye also reminded everyone that he hopes to see them next season at the Glanbrook Arena for the home games on Wednesday nights at 7:30pm.
