The City of Hamilton is doing great things to help keep our Earth beautiful and healthy.
Did you know that the City of Hamilton is on a mission to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and that being “Clean and Green” is one of our key priorities? #EarthDay2021
Earlier this year, The City and Enbridge Gas announce the first renewable natural gas (RNG) fuelled bus in Ontario, making @HSR the first public transportation authority in Ontario to use RNG, to transport customers. https://www.hamilton.ca/government-information/news-centre/news-releases/enbridge-gas-partners-city-hamilton-fuel-ontarios
In one year, the HSR RNG bus will use and divert 450 tonnes of organic waste from the landfill. That’s equivalent to 38 garbage trucks, while also displacing CO2 emissions from 36,000 litres of diesel consumed in a year!
In 2020, 12,218 trees were planted city-wide along streets, parks, cemeteries and other naturalized areas!
Hamilton was designated (in 2020) as the 39th “Bee City” in Canada, recognizing the City and community partners efforts to protect pollinators. Watch: https://youtu.be/35FjxTkqMRk
Also in 2020, over 1,100 volunteers took part in City clean-up activities and contributed more than 4,100 volunteer hours to keep their neighbourhoods clean & green.
Christmas came early in 2020, with the arrival of new KIA Soul EVs: https://twitter.com/cityofhamilton/status/1336045027458486273
Hamilton has a new Climate Change website: https://www.hamilton.ca/city-initiatives/strategies-actions/climate-change-action, which tells the story of climate change action and our transition to a prosperous low carbon future. (Attached time chart)
Finally, we’re thrilled about our new Community Energy and Emissions Plan, our pathway towards meeting Hamilton’s future energy needs and reducing GHG emissions: https://www.hamilton.ca/city-initiatives/priority-projects/community-energy-and-emissions-plan
