Binbrook Road Closure: What’s Happening, Why It Matters, and How We’re Responding

The City of Hamilton has initiated a full closure of Binbrook Road between Fletcher Road and Royal Winter Drive to complete critical underground work that will pave the way for something our community desperately needs: a new public elementary school in Binbrook.

We know this closure is causing significant disruption—especially for families, school communities, and commuters—and we want you to know that Councillor Mark Tadeson and team are fully aware, engaged, and actively responding.

Why the Closure Is Urgent and Necessary

This isn’t routine maintenance. The infrastructure work being done at Binbrook and Fletcher is vital to extending sewer and water services to the future school site. Without this work, construction on the much-needed new school cannot begin.

Our goal is to have shovels in the ground by this fall. With the ongoing overcrowding at Bellmoore Elementary, this school will provide much-needed relief for families in our rapidly growing community. Every week counts.

What’s Been Done to Manage Traffic

To help manage detoured traffic, the City has established an official detour route via Cemetery Road, keeping detour traffic on main roads and away from residential areas.

However, we are aware that some drivers are not following these designated routes and are instead cutting through neighbourhoods—especially on Pumpkin Pass, where we’ve heard your concerns loud and clear.

What We're Doing Right Now

Councillor Tadeson and staff have been on-site regularly, speaking with residents and reporting back to City staff to flag concerns in real time. Here’s what we’ve done in response to your feedback and requests:

  • Requested Hamilton Police enforcement on Pumpkin Pass, with a focus on speeding, stop signs, and truck route violations.

  • Requested Local Traffic Only signage at Fletcher Road & Pumpkin Pass to discourage cut-through traffic as requested by many local residents.

  • Requested an additional school crossing guard near Our Lady of Hope Catholic Elementary School to ensure children's safety during this period.

  • Raised resident concerns directly with staff to fast-track any safety enhancements as needed.

How You Can Help

We want to stress that detour compliance is essential to keeping our neighbourhoods safe. While we can’t force drivers to follow the designated route, we are committed to doing everything within our power to reduce unsafe behaviour and address concerns as they arise.

We ask residents to continue sharing their experiences. Your feedback helps us advocate more effectively and make real-time improvements during this construction period.

We understand that this road closure is a major inconvenience. But it's also a major step forward—a sign that long-awaited progress is being made for our community’s future.

On behalf of Councillor Tadeson, thank you for your patience and your continued engagement. Together, we’re building the foundation for a stronger Binbrook—literally.
