2025 Rural Roadside, Urban Boulevard, and Expressway Grass Cutting Programs

The City of Hamilton is committed to maintaining clean, safe, and visually appealing roadways throughout the municipality. To support this commitment, the 2025 Rural Roadside, Urban Boulevard, and Expressway Grass Cutting Programs will operate from April 21, 2025, to November 7, 2025, ensuring roadside and expressway areas are properly maintained across all seasons.
These essential programs are delivered by external service providers under new or ongoing contracts and are designed to promote safety, improve aesthetics, and support healthy green spaces across both rural and urban Hamilton.
Rural Roadsides Grass Cutting
Level of Service:
Mowing is provided along all rural roads, covering areas from the edge of the pavement to the top of the back slope of the ditch profile. This includes intersections, daylight triangles, and areas surrounding guide rails.
First Cut: Begins in May
Second Cut: Begins in August
Infrastructure Inventory:
Approximately 2,128 linear kilometres of roadside across Wards 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15.
Program Delivery:
Services are provided by external contractors, divided into three geographical sections: West, South, and East Districts. (Ward 11 has both South and East Teams attending)
2025 marks the first year of a new contract, with the potential for up to a five-year term.
Urban Boulevards
Level of Service: Maintenance of designated urban boulevards, hard surface islands, and steep slopes from mid-April through mid-October on the following schedule:
Urban Boulevards: 12 mowing cycles (approximately every two weeks)
Hard Surface Islands: 5 mowing cycles
Steep Slopes: 3 mowing cycles
Infrastructure Inventory:
Approximately 1,483,471 square metres across 1,350 individual sites citywide.
Program Delivery:
Delivered by four external service providers under two separate contracts.
One contract is in its first term, and the other is entering its second term, both with potential five-year durations.
Red Hill Valley Parkway and Lincoln Alexander Parkway
Level of Service: Grass cutting and debris clean-up along the Red Hill Valley and Lincoln Alexander Parkways will be provided with the following service levels:
Spring and Fall: Litter and debris clean-up
Center Island Medians and Road Shoulders: 4 mowing cycles
Access Ramps: 9 mowing cycles
Infrastructure Inventory:
Approximately 2,120,000 square metres across overpasses, access ramps, roadway shoulders, curb lines, and center island medians.
Program Delivery:
Services are provided by external contractors under a new contract beginning in 2025, with the option for up to five years of renewal.
