Illegal Dumping

Dumping waste on private or public property without explicit permission from the landowner is classified as illegal dumping.

Instances of illegal dumping encompass:

​

  • Discarding bulk items like sofas, bags of household waste, and construction materials along roadsides, escarpments, alleyways, or parks.

  • Depositing household waste into waste collection containers situated in parks or on streets.

  • Leaving items, such as furniture or large toys, around donation drop boxes that cannot accommodate them.

  • Disposing of waste in private dumpsters.

Penalties for illegal dumping may vary, but the maximum fine upon conviction is $10,000.

 

REPORTING ILLEGAL DUMPING

 

To report illegal dumping on public property contact wasteenforcement@hamilton.ca,

 

For private property contact mle@hamilton.ca or call 905-546-CITY(2489).

 

Provide as much information as you can, including:

  • make/model or license plate number of vehicle

  • description of people

  • any other information you think would help in an investigation

 

Do not approach anyone you believe is responsible for the dumping. City staff are trained to deal with these situations and are responsible for the investigation.
