A beautifully decorated tree is a delight during the holidays. To make it a truly Merry Christmas for you and your loved ones, follow these simple, sensible, fire safety guidelines:
• Use only artificial trees that carry the CSA label and choose cool lights or solar lights for safer operation and energy efficiency.
• Do not overload the wiring system in your house. If other lights dim when you turn on the tree lights, these other lights should be switched to another circuit while the tree lights are on.
• Cut off at least 2 inches from the bottom of a fresh tree before placing it in a stand. This will enhance the tree’s water absorbency capabilities. Check the water level regularly.
• Place the tree away from fireplaces, stoves, heaters, TVs and of the resources of heat that could dry out the tree, creating a dangerous fire hazard. Keep a dependable fire extinguisher close by.
• When you buy a fresh tree, store it outdoors until you are ready to put it up and decorate it. Household heat lacks humidity, so could result in a dry tree.
• Take down and dispose of the tree safely when the season is over.
